Chris Mathews is an English teacher at Oakland Aviation High School, primarily teaching 9th and 10th graders.  In addition to his duties as a classroom teacher, Mr. Mathews also serves as the Athletic Director, Boys’ Soccer Coach, and the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Coach.  All three teams qualified for the Bay Area Charter School Athletic League playoffs, with both the Boys’ Soccer and Girls’ Basketball teams reaching the semi-finals.

This is Mr. Mathews’ fifth year of teaching and second at OAHS.  Prior to his time in Oakland, he lived in Portland, Oregon, where he taught for 3 years at David Douglas High School.  Mr. Mathews attended Oregon State University where he received a Master of Arts in Teaching, a B.A. in English, and minors in Sociology and European History.   While at OSU, Mr. Mathews was a Sports Columnist and Humor Columnist for the campus newspaper, The Daily Barometer.

In addition to English, Mr. Mathews also has a strong interest in History.  He has recently passed the CSET for Social Studies and will be a credentialed Social Studies teacher in the upcoming school year.  He also currently holds a Crosscultural, Language and Development Certificate (CLAD) from the State of California.

Mr. Mathews travelled throughout Southeast Asia last summer visiting Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar, where he helped raise money and helped buy supplies for those affected by Hurricane Nargis.  The money was used to buy farm equipment, to help train aid workers, and to help orphanages improve their facilities.
